From the beginning, L.M.O.L. and its members
have manifested our motto, “People Helping People” through our numerous
CVS (Community Volunteer Services) projects. L.M.O.L. has always
attracted much attention and respect from
the community and has been the envy of Lodges across Canada.
Inspired by its many dedicated CVS chairmen, the Lodge has been awarded
countless District and International honours, and locally, has often
been recognized for our service within the community. What follows is an
all too brief summary of only some of the more than 1,000 programs
undertaken by the Lodge over the past 60 years.
Fundraising for other Charities – Dr. Ross Tilley Burn Unit, which has
been so prominently featured in the Toronto Star lately, The Mandarin
School, Providence Villa, Crippled Kids (along with Whipper Billy
Watson), Jerry Lewis Telethon, and
a host of other community causes.
Special needs and underprivileged – Over 30 years with Bloorview
Hospital. This led to a 20 year association with Vaughan Glen Hospital, a
home for people with C.P. & M.D., where, along with outings to the
Ice Capades and Centre Island, we were pioneer volunteers in the BLISS
Symbolics program, which allowed many residents to be able to “Speak”
for the first time in their lives. We also devoted many years to the
Cerebral Palsy Association of Ontario monthly meetings and a Night at
the Races.
The Jewish Community – Over 40 years of programs with the Kadima Centre
for developmentally disabled Jewish adults, especially Chanukkah
Parties, outings to Canada’s Wonderland and the Blue Jays, the June
picnic, and bowling. This association continues to this day.
The UJA Walkathon and the Good Age Club. Chanukkah & Purim basket
delivery, Chanukkah Candle Lighting in Senior’s Homes (a huge mitzvah),
Shabbat Services at Sunnybrook Veterans’ Wing, all of which are ongoing.
The Community at Large – The Jerusalem Pavilion at Caravan, Blood Donor
Clinics, Princess Margaret Hospital Outpatient tours, Sunnybrook and
Cummer Lodge Bingos, bringing coffee and doughnuts to the police at
R.I.D.E. spotchecks, outings with Central Neighbourhood House and
bowling with Big & Little Brothers.
L.M.O.L. is fiercely proud of the scope and depth of our programs and the dedication of the members that carry them out.
